What Christianity Is Really About

[This reflection by The HBC Team was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 27/Jul/2025]

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2 v8–9 [NIVUK]

Have you ever felt like religion feels a bit empty?

Maybe you’ve seen too many people go through the motions on a Sunday but live unchanged lives the rest of the week. Maybe faith has felt more like a box-ticking exercise than something that actually brings life. Or maybe you’ve been wondering what Christianity really looks like when you strip away the ritual and get to the heart of it.

A Tale Of Two Specks

[This reflection by David Makanjuala was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 20/Jul/2025]

It’s that time of year, so picture a tennis ball lying in one corner of Centre court at Wimbledon. On that tennis ball – one of many scattered around the court – there are tiny specks of dust. A couple of them – we shall call them speck 1 and speck 2 – start to talk to each other (allow your imagination to take over from here).

Holiday Conversations

[This reflection by Dennis Ginter was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 13/Jul/2025]

We have recently enjoyed a week of beautiful weather and familiar surroundings in Dorset! He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
1 Thessalonians 5 v24

One that has always stayed with me is the remarkable story of George Müller, who cared for thousands of orphans in the 19th century. Time and again, he trusted God to provide food, clothing, and education – and God did.

No Mystical Powers Here

[This reflection by Dazz Jones was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 29/Jun/2025]

In church, people sometimes talk to me as if I have mystical powers – or as though I’m God’s favourite, just because I’m one of the pastors. Other times, they take on a different tone or demeanour when they speak to me, compared to how they talk with others. They might try to sound more profound or, for lack of a better word, more spiritual.

Jesus in the Book of Daniel

[This reflection by Helen Ruffhead was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 22/Jun/2025]

When studying the book of Daniel at Connect in Faith recently, I was struck by the number of references to Jesus in it.

In chapter 2, Jesus is the rock which shatters the statue in King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. As Daniel explained to the king, the statue represented 4 great kingdoms and in the time of the 4th kingdom (Rome), God would establish a kingdom which would destroy all the earthly kingdoms but his kingdom would last forever.
