God Provides – Then and Now

[This reflection by Martin Shorey was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 06/Jul/2025]

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
1 Thessalonians 5 v24

I love reading stories of how God has provided for people in need. The Bible is full of such moments, of course – but I find it especially encouraging to hear about more recent examples.

One that has always stayed with me is the remarkable story of George Müller, who cared for thousands of orphans in the 19th century. Time and again, he trusted God to provide food, clothing, and education – and God did.

More recently, Pete Greig shares a powerful story in his book God on Mute about a friend named Susanna. During a particularly difficult season of unanswered prayer, she discovered a 200 franc note tucked away in her cupboard. Not once, but twice – each time right when she needed it most. Rather than keeping the money for herself, she passed it on to a friend in need. It was a quiet miracle—and a beautiful act of trust and generosity in the middle of uncertainty.

And closer to home, we only have to look at the story of our own church building. The journey to where we are today was filled with challenges, doubts, and delays. At times, it must have seemed impossible. And yet, here we are – celebrating ten years in this space. We are so thankful for the prayers, the sacrificial giving, and the miraculous provision that made it all possible.

I don’t know about you, but I need reminders like these. Because it’s easy to forget. It’s easy to doubt. And as we now look ahead to a new phase of building and vision, we need to hold on to the truth that God still provides. The miraculous is still possible. And His plans cannot be thwarted.

Let’s keep trusting Him—together.
