When My Heart Changed Before My Circumstances Did

[This reflection by Becca Day was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 18/Oct/2026]

We’ve been talking a lot in church lately about trusting God. This is something I think every believer will struggle with at one point or another, especially when things don’t seem to be going to ‘our plan’. I find, in moments like this, it’s helpful to look back on the times you know God has been faithful and lean on those memories of His goodness.

For me, that means looking back on an experience I had earlier this year. We were dealing with a lot of severe illness in our household. Though I prayed relentlessly, there didn’t seem to be much evidence of God moving in our lives. I had heard about the power of fasting and decided to try it for the first time, thinking maybe that was what was needed to finally bring healing to our home.

I entered into that week of fasting excited to finally hear from God. And I did … just not in the way I was expecting. At the end of the week, I had the strongest conviction that I had gone into this fast with the wrong intentions. I had hoped, whether I realised it or not, that my fast might somehow ‘bend God’s ear’, that maybe it might convince Him of my desperation for a miracle. Basically, I was trying to control the situation. But at the end of my fast, God told me that there was nothing I could actually do to make a miracle happen. He had already heard my prayer. He already knew my desperation. All that was left for me to do was to trust Him.

When my fast was over, even though I didn’t yet have my miracle, I felt the most immense sense of peace that everything was going to work out exactly as it should. Our situation hadn’t changed – if anything it had gotten worse – but my heart had changed.

Three days later, I got my miracle in the form of a letter telling us that a long-awaited surgery had been scheduled, after literal years of delays and waiting. In the months following, healing has come to our family. God kept His promise. He always does. All He required of me was to trust Him.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
