Eating my words is not much fun! I’ve often been heard to say that I don’t want HBC to grow bigger numerically; that it might no longer really be a ‘family’. Well, I needn’t have worried!

Can Prayer Meetings Be Exciting?

Fifty years ago I attended my first prayer meeting. At the time I was angry with God and hated to hear people praying, but some people from the Christian Union had befriended me on my first day at university. About 3 weeks into term, feeling lonely one evening I went to visit a friend, only to find her about to leave for the prayer meeting, so something made me decide to join her.

You Must Remember This

November starts with a period of remembrance – first we remember a guy who efforts came to naught and then we remember those whose efforts were instrumental in protecting and maintaining the freedoms that our society values.

Invitation Is Scary, Isn’t It?

The thought of asking a friend to church can feel awkward, even ridiculous. I sometimes imagine how strange it might sound, and I don’t even let myself dream about what would happen if they actually said yes and showed up.

All Change!

What good would it do to change my way of living
If everything inside me stayed the same?

The question was posed by song-writer Barry McGuire in his 1978 song “What Good Would It Do?”; the song was later included in his “Cosmic Cowboy” album. The lyrics ask whether there is any benefit arising from a change of behaviour if that change is only superficial.
