A couple of Sundays ago, Rob Bell drew our attention to the rich variety in our church. We are people of every race, nationality, economic background, education, sexual orientation …and AGE! I’m going to be 87 next spring and, naturally, I’ve begun to consider that fact.
In 1 Corinthians 4:16, Paul writes “Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.” In last Tuesday’s meditation in Sarah Young’s JESUS CALLING, she hears Him saying, “Those who live close to me develop an inner aliveness that makes them seem youthful in spite of their years”.
That reminds me of Galatians 2:20: “…it is no longer I who live, but is is Christ who lives in me.” That is not figurative language! It is literally true, (and maybe especially) for Jesus followers of advanced years – that God Himself is their inner life!
The older men and women in our church have so much to contribute! They don’t usually demand to be heard, but when we sincerely ask “What do you think?”, we’ll often be surprised at the depth of wisdom that we find in their answer!
May the conversations we have on Sunday mornings and during the week become amazing experiences of the kind of ‘one anotherings’ that enrich us, whatever our chronological age!
