God Provides – Then and Now

[This reflection by Martin Shorey was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 06/Jul/2025]

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
1 Thessalonians 5 v24

I love reading stories of how God has provided for people in need. The Bible is full of such moments, of course – but I find it especially encouraging to hear about more recent examples.

One that has always stayed with me is the remarkable story of George Müller, who cared for thousands of orphans in the 19th century. Time and again, he trusted God to provide food, clothing, and education – and God did.

Controversy in the Archives

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during July 2025]

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against each other.
Colossians 3 v12-13 [NIVUK]

During the past few days I have had the ‘pleasure’ of revisiting my domestic archives. Hidden amongst the bills and receipts from some thirty years ago were many memories, some pleasing, some embarrassing. Bad News, Good News

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during June 2025]

And behold, the Cushite came, and the Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king! For the Lord has delivered you this day from the hand of all who rose up against you.”
2 Samuel 18 v31 [ESVUK]

We live in an age of instant news, some reports can be verified whilst other material seems to be speculative. What should we believe? Do we have time to check what we hear?

Jesus in the Book of Daniel

[This reflection by Helen Ruffhead was published in the weekly news bulletin of Horley Baptist Church, 22/Jun/2025]

When studying the book of Daniel at Connect in Faith recently, I was struck by the number of references to Jesus in it.

In chapter 2, Jesus is the rock which shatters the statue in King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. As Daniel explained to the king, the statue represented 4 great kingdoms and in the time of the 4th kingdom (Rome), God would establish a kingdom which would destroy all the earthly kingdoms but his kingdom would last forever.
