What’s the first thing that you think of when you see that phrase? If you’re a football fan (which I am), you’ll probably think immediately of Fabrizio Romano, a football journalist, very prominent on social media, who uses that phrase whenever a transfer is about to be completed.
Transfers are a very big deal for any football fan, always causing endless debates about what type of player your club needs. The right back might be a bit dodgy, the striker isn’t scoring enough goals – get that player in to sort it. All clubs are always looking for the best they can get.
Thankfully, the church isn’t like that. The idea of the church has never been to get the ‘best people’ in. Everyone is welcome and everyone has a place. Look around you today. Horley Baptist Church, a tiny sample of the church worldwide, has all sorts of different people, from all different types of backgrounds and ethnicities. We’re all people with differences in so many ways, but all welcome because of Jesus. It’s no talent contest, we’re welcomed unconditionally by Him, no matter what.
And that, of course, means that we should welcome everyone as well, no matter what. We all journey together, which definitely gives a whole different meaning to ‘here we go’.
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
