The Honest Truth of Christmas

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1 v14 (NIV)

At the Thursday Group carol service last week, I tested the group on their knowledge of Christmas carol lyrics — and it turned out to be more difficult than we expected. These hymns and songs are so familiar to us, yet the words can easily wash over us. In doing so, we miss their meaning, their truth, and their honesty.

Advent is a season observed in most Christian denominations as a time of waiting and preparation for both the celebration of Jesus’s birth at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, often referred to as Advent Sunday. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year in Western Christianity.[1]

Stone, Wood and Nails

Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them; whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.
Ecclesiastes 10 v9 [NIVUK]

At the time that these words were written those two tasks were part of the regular routine for many people. To put it in terms that are relevant to us, there is risk and potential danger even in our ordinary daily activities.

In the Dark

Have you ever noticed how often God works in the dark? We live in a non-stop world with cities that never sleep, with systems operational 24-7 and with people constantly on the move. Yet it all began in the dark.

Invitation Is Scary, Isn’t It?

The thought of asking a friend to church can feel awkward, even ridiculous. I sometimes imagine how strange it might sound, and I don’t even let myself dream about what would happen if they actually said yes and showed up.
