Membership Matters 5: Discern Together – shaping the future as a family.

We’ve come to the final part of our membership series. So far, we’ve looked at growing, serving, and giving. Now, we turn to something distinctly Baptist and deeply powerful, discerning together. Because here, every member matters.

Membership Matters 2: Grow Together

Message 2: Grow Together, following Jesus in community.

Welcome back. In this message, we’re exploring the first responsibility of church membership: grow together. You’ve probably noticed that following Jesus isn’t something we’re meant to do on our own. The Christian life is personal, but it’s never private.

One of the most beautiful things about the early church was their commitment to one another. In Acts chapter 2, we see them gathering in the temple courts and in homes, learning, worshipping, eating, and praying together. Why? Because faith grows best in community. Hebrews 12 v2 [NIVUK]

Of Thee I Sing

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during January 2025]

The prize-winning 1930s musical ‘Of Thee I Sing’ is a political satire focussing on the election and inauguration of a somewhat unconventional president of the United States. The storyline includes promises made and broken, threats of impeachment, international tension and thwarted ambitions. Of course, being fiction, it concludes with them all living happily ever-after.

Trust but Verify

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge’ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during November 2024]

‘Trust but verify’ is an expression that came to prominence in the mid 1980s, particularly in relation to the discussions between the leaders of the USA and the USSR about limiting the proliferation of nuclear armaments. The expression itself is alleged to be based on an old Russian proverb but that cannot be verified! Does the concept of trust but verify have a spiritual application? (more…)
