D, N, A or P?

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during August 2026]

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12 v2 [NIVUK]

Last week we briefly considered the challenges of maintaining our walk of faith in a society which has largely discarded its Christian heritage. Can we find a balance which preserves our spiritual integrity without alienating those who currently have no interest in our faith?

Being Prepared

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during February 2026]

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
Joshua 2 v1 [ESVUK]

Is it not a little curious that these two men should choose such a place for their overnight stay? Surely, it is not what we would expect from men who were undertaking a mission from God.

Much Encumbered

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during October 2025]

I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.
Philippians 3 v8 [KJV]

It is surely no coincidence when a word of Scripture fits our plans or experiences. Message 2: Grow Together, following Jesus in community.

Welcome back. In this message, we’re exploring the first responsibility of church membership: grow together. You’ve probably noticed that following Jesus isn’t something we’re meant to do on our own. The Christian life is personal, but it’s never private.

One of the most beautiful things about the early church was their commitment to one another. In Acts chapter 2, we see them gathering in the temple courts and in homes, learning, worshipping, eating, and praying together. Why? Because faith grows best in community. Hebrews 10 tells us not to give up meeting together, but to encourage one another. And all the more as we see the day approaching.

Shouldn’t, Couldn’t, Wouldn’t

[A ‘Tuesday Challenge‘ originally prepared for the congregation of Horley Baptist Church during July 2025]

I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
Acts 26 v9 [ESVUK]

Saul of Tarsus was convinced that he was working for God, that he was doing what God wanted him to do. Later in his life he came to realise that he should not be doing what he had been doing. Are there times when we too are surprised by the realisation that what we think we are doing for God is not actually what he wants us to do?
